Standard engraving includes any character on a standard US English keyboard, plus the heart icon (♥ solid or outline).
Length of engraving depends on ring size, ring width, the ring style, and size and position of print.
Rings with a wrap or tip print on the outside can accommodate about 25 characters, including spaces. Rings with a tip print on the inside can accommodate about 12 characters and spaces.

Specialty engraving includes signatures and handwritten text or even a logo or drawing.
Length of engraving depends on ring size, ring width, the ring style, pendant style and size and position of print.
Please be aware that flourishing signatures or handwriting may need a size reduction on a ring, and maybe better suited to wider rings.
